The Virginia Court System can be confusing as to what kind of cases you find in each court; therefore, we usually begin by explaining the two main courts you will be interested in.

Circuit Court: In Virginia, this is the court of General jurisdiction. We find criminal cases for which a person can be sentenced to the state penitentiary, and all jury trials are heard here.

General District Court: In Virginia, this is the court of Limited jurisdiction. This court hears misdemeanors, ordinance violations, traffic cases and felony preliminaries. No jury trials are heard here.

There can be misdemeanors and felonies in either court. At the General District Court, felonies would be preliminary hearings, but until the case is transferred to the Circuit court it may be found in the General District court search.

We recommend searching the Circuit as well as the General District Court.
